IHIF Q&A: Ruslan Husry, managing director, HR Group

Ruslan Husry is managing director at central European multi-brand hotel operator HR Group. He is appearing at IHIF 2021 in a session entitled
'Stronger Together - Overcoming the Crisis through M&As and Improved Alignment'

How would you describe market conditions for hotel operators in the country?

Overall, the market conditions in most European markets are extremely challenging given the uncertain outlook of the rebound, plus unknown future developments of the pandemic counter measures and the general softness compared to previous demand levels in many gateway cities. What used to be highly profitable markets turned into highly volatile environments. Historically softer markets see a bigger increase in leisure customers.

Within the last 18 months or so we had to come closer with our partners, finding joint solutions to conquer the challenges of the crisis together. That made us stronger, more flexible, and confident that we are well prepared for our expansion strategy.

What are the biggest trends in terms of operations coming out of the crisis?

The current perspective of working from home and office space utilization has an impact on work in general and how companies operate. In many cases it even raises life balance and effectiveness. Further, the “Next normal” (a McKinsey terminology) will be a change in travel behaviour, especially in terms of corporate travel which will focus on cost savings and sustainability. Therefore, the hospitality industry has to adjust operations and develop solutions and offers to stay relevant.

What technology innovations are having the biggest impact on hospitality?

At HR Group we truly believe in the next level of digitalization. Keyless entry is widely available, and your mobile device will become your personal concierge. Providing relevant context, enabling a fully automated start to end customer journey will be the key to success. However, having said this, we are a people business. Taking care of our guests needs, providing a safe and healthy environment and creating memorable experiences, enabled by technology, and executed by well-trained hotel staff will be highly recognized by our guests and enhance customer loyalty and willingness to return.

What are your looking forward to with regards to your participation to IHIF?

For us at HR Group, the IHIF 2021 is the most important event in 2021. Our aim is to showcase our knowledge across multiple asset classes and customer segments. Starting from more residential and long-stay products, economy to mid-scale brands, cold and warm resorts, to urban gateway locations with excessive meeting space. We are looking for engaging conversation with existing and new partners throughout the conference and will remain open for business post IHIF.
